Toyota announced Wednesday the recall of 1.7 million North American vehicles in the current recall involving potentially lethal Takata airbag inflators.
The recall of the airbags Takata has affected virtually all major car manufacturers. The airbags were made with chemical ammonium nitrate and were likely to explode during deployment, potentially projecting flaming shrapnel on passengers. At least 23 people worldwide have died from incidents attributable to faulty devices.
The final reminder concerns some Toyota and Lexus models, including 1.3 million in the United States. Among the Toyota models involved:
4Runner (2010 to 2016)
Corolla (2010 to 2013)
Matrix (2010 to 2013)
Siena (2011 to 2014)
Lexus models involved include:
ES 350 (2010 to 2012)
GX 460 (2010 to 2017)
IS 250C (2010 to 2015)
IS 350C (2010 to 2015)
IS 250 (2010 to 2013)
IS 350 (2010 to 2013)
IS-F (2010 to 2014)
Also included: the Scion XB (2010 to 2015).
Owners can check if their vehicles have been recalled by visiting the Toyota website. They will also receive a notification by mail beginning in late January, according to a Toyota statement.
This week, the Ford Motor Co. recalled about 1 million vehicles in North America as part of the recall of the Takata airbags.
The most vulnerable vehicles were first repaired, but security advocates claim that more vehicles should have already been repaired, given the danger associated with inflators.
